This is the 2nd year for Buttered Popcorn in my Zone 7b North Alabama Garden. It is reblooming for the THIRD time! I love its cheerful, golden yellow color. Like liquid sunshine.
I purchased this in one of Oakes collections. It has bright yellow blooms that do pop in my 6a woodland landscape, I particularly like the under turning of the petals. Lots of compliments!
I planted the 4 I received one month ago in the heat of the summer. They are all green and have multiple flowers. I have several day lilies from other suppliers and Oakes are much more vigorous. I will be back for more!. Zone 7, East Tennessee
Buttered Popcorn has got to be my favorite of the warm yellow daylilies! I’ve purchased several lilies from Oaks over the years and love all of them, but yellows have a special place in my heart. When I was a child my grandmother had a row of beautiful yellows that I’ve always tried to copy. Buttered Popcorn did the trick for me. All the Oaks daylilies we’ve gotten have been superb quality and grown full and prolific. So many gorgeous choices.
I love this daylily – it’s been a great addition to my garden! My garden is quite a ways away from my house, but I can see the bright gold of these huge blooms from my front window! They are planted in front of a line of pine trees, so the contrast is gorgeous! The pine trees do shade them in the morning, but they get full afternoon sun, and they really do shine from across the yard! This is only my first year with Buttered Popcorn, but this guy was so full of continuous blooms, it has quickly become one of my favorites!
I moved the plant From KY to Iowa a couple years ago. It is thriving in its new garden and is a bloom that can be seen from the long driveway. Just a beautiful yellow day lily
Definitely my favorite!!! The brilliant yellow blooms seem to keep coming!! The foliage is showy and prolific too!!! The dinner plate size blooms are truly gold! A must have for any day lily garden!! Does fantastic in my Zone 7 garden.
One of my very favorite daylilies. Tall strong stalks hold 6″ bold golden lilies! The blooms are plentiful so the blooming season lasts about 10 days in my zone 4 garden. People walking past my yard always point out how beautiful they are.
I moved this day lily with me from Ky to Iowa last year. She has grown double in size and is a beautiful yellow that everyone can see clear down our long driveway.
Just planted 5 this spring. Buttered Popcorn plant provided a bright display and grew quickly. Cannot wait foe next years display.

This is like Stella’s big brother. Fills the gap between Stella’s bloom and rebloom with massive bright flowers that are pretty something. Very vigorous for me in MA in a good sunny location and also does nicely in a less prime spot with a bit of shade.
This is the strongest, most reliable daylily I grow. It comes into full bloom just as the Mary Todd daylilies are finishing and the Indian Summer rudbeckia (a perfect color match) are beginning to bloom. Here in the lower Hudson Valley that is just after the Fourth of July. BP creates a garden full of sunshine on even a stormy summer day. Mine are shaded until noon, then get full sun–a difficult abrupt transition for any plant–but it doesn’t faze Buttered Popcorn. The gold is a fantastic foil for deep colors and pastels like Jackmanii Clematis and heirloom cleome. And the most incredible plus: our groundhog does not eat it!!!
We started with about six plants almost fifteen years ago and they have grown into this beautiful annual show. Cars are continually slowing down and stopping when the lilies are in full bloom. They are a beautiful addition to our gardens.
While there is Wisteria in the corner, what is covering the fence is actually Clematis Terniflora (Autumn Clematis) -a plant in the buttercup family. (I should mention it is considered a Category II invasive plant in Florida and some other eastern states!) I keep it under control through constant vigilance, even though it may not look like it! In the Fall it looks like snow and smells wonderful.

Buttered Popcorn is my Favorite
Mary Kemp (verified owner)–
I bought buttered popcorn a year ago to go with my Frankly Scarlett at the front of my house in Plano TX – together these flowers are just gorgeous together. The deep yellow with the deep red are just breathtaking. I wish I had planted them all across the front of the house. If we had stayed another year, I would have ran them to the other side of the front as well. We moved to Prosper TX in the spring – both buttered popcorn and frankly scarlet came with me. These two are my favorite daylillies so I had to bring them since we now live in a townhouse. I highly recommend buttered popcorn. It does not let you down.
Buttered Popcorn is an excellent daylily. I planted several on the outer border of a flower bed 3 years ago. I left space between each plant hoping the plant would multiply filling in the space. I was not disappointed. The plants multiplied in no time and now I have a solid edge of these good as gold day lilies. I love the color, very bright and cheery, and the blooming period lasts for several weeks. There were excessive spring rains this year which brought the day lilies into an earlier blooming season. I have been able to thin the plants, at only 3 years, to plant in other areas of the gardens.
I love this variety because it really takes the Zone 8b heat. The thick petals don’t fade or shrivel in hot sun or radiant heat. The blooms are sturdy, lasting more than a day. The big, true yellow flowers scream “LOOK AT ME!”
Buttered Popcorn is the most success I have ever had growing daylilies, and I’ve grown a lot with varying degrees of joy. I received it as part of a group of rebloomers, I think. It did OK last year but this year—–started in April, long before the last frost in our zone 5b, and actually bloomed at the beginning of May! It has been blooming ever since and getting better every day. Huge, showy flowers in a stunning buttery gold. The plant itself is 33″ and the flowers are 6.5″. My daughter, who is not such a fan of yellow flowers, suggested I buy 100 and cover our whole hillside. Absolutely gorgeous and the star of my daylily garden.
Zone 5 in Omaha Nebraska. I ordered a Butter popcorn last September and this morning on July 3rd it bloomed a big bright yellow bloom..It has 5 scrapes and many buds on each scrape and each one is loaded with buds. It is a very beautiful bright yellow and I wish I had ordered a couple more. If you like a bright yellow this is the one to order.. I give buttered Popcorn 5 stars.
I bought two of these plants at the daylily festival last summer. It was several days before I finally made it back home to put them in the ground and I was worried about their survival. Imagine my surprise when just a few weeks later I had one scape and 1-2 small blooms from each of my plants! I was excited to see what this summer would bring! Well, to say that these two first-year plants did well is an understatement!!!! One of them put up 13 scapes with an average of 7-8 blooms per scape!!! That’s probably around 100 blooms just from that one plant!!!!! The other put up nine scapes and also averaged 7-8 blooms per scape!!!! It has been absolutely incredible!!! They have been blooming for a month and every day I have had multiple giant blooms to enjoy! Buttered Popcorn, in my opinion, is a must-have daylily for zone 7! Mine are not even planted in full sun… they get morning sun and afternoon shade. Thank you, Oakes for your healthy, high-quality plants!
If you are looking for a big, neon gold daylily, this is the one. I got 1 plant 5 years ago, and I now have 5-6 big clumps. It blooms pretty much nonstop from mid summer to fall. I have Buttered Popcorn mixed with a magenta-colored Monarda, and daylily Dad’s Best White, which is also a very vigorous grower, for a brilliant, eye-catching combination that adds color to my vegetable garden. Make sure you have plenty of room for Buttered Popcorn to spread out, because it gets very large, and it may crowd out smaller plants.
I bought 3 of these and they are great! They are tall and the flowers are large and showey. They show up well planted in a mass. They plants got large and multiplied alot in only 2 years. If you like the big gold color you can’t go wrong with this one. Love it!!!!
I purchased 16 day lily plants from Oakes in July – 5 different varieties with multiples of each except Butter Popcorn. I wasn’t sure about it so I thought I would “try one”. I planted them all in late July/early August and couldn’t wait for next summer to see the blooms. Well, to my surprise, Buttered Popcorn bloomed – big – in September. I was over the moon. But imagine my sheer shock when I just went outside and noticed new buds on it – on Oct 25th – in ZONE 5a!! I am ordering more to extend my bloom season! I love Oakes!
It is mid-October in central Ohio and I counted 85 buds on my Buttered Popcorn. Second bloom seems amazing this year. Can’t believe its such a late season bloom!
I just received these plants and the roots are huge! Very good deal and was happy to have about 5 fans per plant. They are in the ground and look very healthy. Also loved my free Mary Todd! Can’t wait to see them next year.
Planted 48 Buttered Popcorn daylilies along a 56′ length of white picket fence in the fall of 2007. The first summer of bloom was good but only a hint of what was to come. Every summer, the plants have become larger and the bloom count is enormous. The color is really a yellow gold and is as brilliant as the sun. This spectacular planting attracts many viewers and compliments. Most of all, it makes me happy!
I am thrilled with this daylily. I split it upon arrival, and it bloomed just a bit its first year. Now, its second year, each plant is huge and the blossoms just glow. They aren’t yellow, they aren’t orange – it’s an indescribable color that stops you in your tracks.
Best yellow rebloomer ever in zone 9, SW Florida, average initial bloom set per plant is 60+. Blooms hold color well even in bright, direct sun. A real winner!
My Buttered Popcorn is only on it’s first cycle of blooms, but it is lovely! Huge, bold blooms make it an eye-catcher. Lots of buds on the scapes for its first cycle. Great buy!
Buttered Popcorn is an almost unending bloomer during our growing season in zone 6. We have a raised bed in our side yard where they grow and can be seen from the street and a couple streets over. We get so many compliments on the tall scapes with the huge gold blooms, they just can’t be unnoticed in the landscape. Want some color from a hardy, easy to grow daylily? Buttered Popcorn could be the answer.
A great yellow…bright and solid. The first two years of this plant the color was a little disappointing. However, now, in its third year, the color is exceptional!
Buttered Popcorn is my all time favorite daylily. It has the best growth, the best bloom and rebloom, and the best long distance, look-at-me color! It’s one of those daylilies that’s really easy to divide, too.

It’s pretty simple: most of you can grow any of the daylilies we sell. If you live in an area with a sustained cold period like we do in East Tennessee, you can grow all the varieties. However, If you live in an area that doesn’t get freezing weather in the winter, dormant varieties won’t work for you; you need to choose evergreen or semi-evergreen varieties.
We normally include bonus plants equal to about 20% of your order. And these aren’t “leftover” plants, or “whatever we’ve got lying around.” These are the same huge, healthy plants we sell. Just leave the decision up to us— we’ll pick something we know you’ll love!
Daylily Stickers!
After the year we’ve all had, we’re trying to wring whatever joy we can find out of every day— even Tax Day*. So we put our thinking caps on and thought, “What is silly and fun and makes everyone happy?”.
That’s when it hit us: stickers! To make your day brighter, we are offering 13 stickers free with every order today through April 19!!!
Stick ’em on your water bottle, your cooler, your laptop (even your wheelbarrow!) or wherever else you could use a bit of cheery color.
*We know that Tax Day has officially been moved to May 17. Since today is traditionally Tax Day, though, we’re going for it.
