HOW TO GROW DAYLILIES: Daylilies are very easy-to-grow. They like a lot of sun and they like a lot of water. For more information on how to care for daylilies, click here.
WHAT DAYLILIES CAN I GROW: Most of you can grow any of the daylilies we sell. If you live in an area with a sustained cold period like we do in East Tennessee, you can grow all the varieties. However, If you live in an area that doesn’t get freezing weather in the winter (like zones 9 and 10), dormant varieties won’t work for you; you’ll need to choose evergreen or semi-evergreen varieties.

BIG PLANTS! When it comes to daylily plants, bigger is better! All of the plants we ship will be three fans or larger — two or three times (or more) what you might receive from other companies. Larger plants get established faster and bloom more quickly!

FARM-FRESH TO YOU! All of your plants will be freshly dug when you order. The leaves are trimmed and the plants are washed and air-dried. Your daylilies will be out of the ground less than 48 hours before they’re headed your way.

BONUS DAYLILIES: We send free daylilies (we call them “bonus” daylilies) with every order. These daylilies are equal to about 20% of your order and are the same huge, healthy plants we sell. Just leave the decision up to us and we’ll pick something you’re sure to love!

ABOUT US: Oakes Daylilies is a family-owned daylily farm that’s been in business for three generations. Our daylilies grow in home gardens, city parks and botanical gardens across the nation– including Hawaii and Canada. We are known in the industry as Daylily Experts and grow over 1000 varieties of daylilies on nearly 70 acres in East Tennessee. But over 50 years ago, we started just like you—with one daylily in a home garden.

  1. Perfect shade of yellow!

We love Hyperion! We live in SE Wisconsin, technically zone 5, but in reality more like zone 4 in our country subdivision. It has thrived in two very different locations – one southern exposure with full sun and one in partial-mostly shade. The color is perfect: soft and pretty, not brassy, and the fragrance is a bonus. We’re about to divide them to add some to a newer bed!

  2. Wonderful tall yellow

    Kathy Shreve (verified owner)

this tall clear lemon yellow daylily is a great back-of the border daylily. Very tough and undemanding, it puts on a great show every year even when neglected. Great with almost any other color, it blooms for a very long time, and to top it off, it’s fragrant, and performs outstandingly in my zone 4, poor soil, erratic mountain weather garden. Can’t be beat, and it’s fragrant, too!

  3. Tall large and bright like a sun

    scwoz (verified owner)

I have these at the back of a garden They stand firm at 40-45 inches tall and they bloom from Sping to almost winter here in Ohio. The color is just a stand out bright yellow and when things haven’t bloomed yet and when everything is dyeing back it brings tha soothing bright sunny yellow to everything around it. Just wow.

  4. Unique shape, lovely color

    Mary C (verified owner)

I’m very happy with my Hyperion plants. They are healthy and vigorous, and their color and shape make them easy to spot in the garden. They don’t seem bothered by the heat and humidity here in zone 7, and they also survived our very dry spring. They are easy-care, beautiful plants.

It’s a Daylily I look forward to every year. There is not a color that does not go well with it.

  6. a tall, happy bit of sunshine

    Nora Suppers (verified owner)

I had purchased Hyperion a few years ago and was thrilled with its tall light yellow flower that seemed to want to touch the sun. I looked forward to its happy sunny exclamation in my garden each summer so when I moved to northeastern PA, of course I just had to buy more to bookend my perennial garden with the same tall yellow flower that seemed to reach for the sky. If you can grow a smile, this is the flower to do it

    Kathy Hollenbeck (verified owner)

Only my first year with Hyperion but it has bloomed beyond my expectations for a first year. I planted these because my mother had them and the fragrance reminds me of her. The price of these is so reasonable for the quality. Thank you, Oakes!

Hyperion establishes a bit slower than some others, but is worth the wait!! This is its 3rd year and without fertilizer it put up 11 scapes, each with 8 to 13 blooms. The blooms open over many weeks, so you get to enjoy the tall, lovely yellow blossoms and gentle fragrance over a long period. For the first 2 years we enjoyed 2 or 3 scapes with lovely blooms and I wished there were more … well, this year I got my wish, and it was well worth waiting for!! Oh yes, and it was unfazed when we had severe thunderstorms, high winds and HAIL … Not one blossom was damaged!!! Would not want to do without this beauty!

In its second season, Hyperion had only 2 scapes but lots of buds. It is the most glorious, clear yellow. It’s approaching 4 ft but needs no help to stay strong and upright. It even held up against strong wind and rain. The perfect daylily.

Hyperion takes a few years to establish. Mine are three years old and this is their first year to really bloom well. The most beautiful shade of pure yellow, not gold at all, and the size of the flower is 4 – 5 inches. They really lighten up the entire bed of oranges and reds. I expect they will get better every year!

received nice sized fans last fall-and the plant grew nicely this spring-early summer, However not one scape has appeared. I will move it to an area that receives a longer period of sun per day and see what happens. Not so impressed with this one, all the others from Oakes has produced the first season and look beautiful and are the size as advertised on the site. Will continue to purchase from Oakes and not let one plant deter me from this wonderful company.

Zone 4a. I’m loath to give a mediocre rating to a daylily with such a vaunted reputation for prolificacy as Hyperion, but it simply has not performed as well as two other Oakes daylilies shipped/planted at the same time, i.e., last fall. I was pleased with the big fans of Wayside King Royale and Mauna Loa sent by Oakes, but in comparison Hyperion’s fans looked like they’d been on a starvation diet, more like slender scallions than daylilies. (I’m aware that Hyperion has grasslike rather than bladelike foliage and predates modern hybrids.) Hyperion survived the winter but has stayed small and relatively unproductive. WKR and Hyperion share the same bed and have received identical care. Each WKR fan produced scapes, but only half the Hyperion fans did. WKR put out 51 blooms this season to Hyperion’s 12. (Mauna Loa, the gift accompanying the Oakes order, is just coming into bloom–its six huge fans have produced six scapes holding some 60 buds!) I realize that I may be jumping the gun, that a daylily gardener shouldn’t count on much happening the first season. Still, the disparity between Hyperion and the other two daylilies has me wondering if slow development is characteristic of Hyperion or if it just seems slow because relatively immature fans were planted with large ones. In any event, I promise to come back next year and change my rating if Hyperion lives up to its rep.

Hyperion is definitely a must-have! Large, clear yellow flowers that appear almost neon lime-green/yellow on a cloudy day. It draws your attention and keeps it for some time! What a gorgeous plant!

We moved to a new home in fall of 2007, and while I could not bring all of my daylilies with me, Hyperion is one that I just could not leave behind because of its beauty and dependability. This is it’s 3rd season in it’s new home and it absolutely astounds me when in bloom. Hyperion has the clearest, most striking yellow available, and the scent is heavenly. I look forward to deadheading each morning just to enjoy the scent and the awesome color. I have it paired with Red Volunteer, the most beautiful, velvety red you have ever seen. You cannot believe the striking picture the two make together. Get this daylily, and make sure you get a Red Volunteer also. You can thank me later. If I could give it a higher rating than 10, I would certainly do so.

Though I absolutely LOVE this reliable daylily for its gorgeous blooms, graceful foliage, and sweet smell, I have to regretfully admit that here in my Southern Cal. small suburban backyard with space at a premium, and enjoying a nearly year round growing season, I should probably have planted evergreen rebloomers. June and July are heavenly, but with so many excellent alternatives, next time I will buy daylilies that give me nearly year round color, and move these lovelies to a less conspicuous position. Hyperion dazzles for a few weeks, then is gone til next year. I’d rate them a 10 if not for above reasons, though.

This review deals with the performance of Hyperion in my garden in Bayside, New York (that’s New York City). I planted a single plant and left it alone–no fertilizer, no extra watering. This gorgeous plant rewarded my neglect with a giant clump of blossoms. I’ve given it a 9 rather than 10 only because, when it came time to move to Texas, I couldn’t separate it enough to take it with me! What a plant!

This one is definitely worth the money. It has had the most prolific bloom of all of my larger daylilies. The color is bright and the blooms look much like the picture. Nice rounded mound, and tall.

Worthy of an award! Not only is the flower large, bright, clear, fragrant and perfect, but even the foliage is attractive. They form a vase shape of narrow dark leaves. NICE!!

Simple and elegant old fashioned form, beautiful clear yellow color, great height and intoxicating soft fragrance. The foliage never seems to get as rough looking late in the season as some of the newer cultivars. Even with all the beautiful new hybrids out there, this is still my all time favorite.

Bright, clear, yellow blossoms. Plant this variety along a path, or by a bench. You’ll be glad you did. Hyperion has a wonderful, rich scent. Expands, but doesn’t get invasive.
