Chicago Star daylily is a true beauty. Masses of big, bright yellow blooms make this a favorite of our garden visitors. A customer favorite, a best seller and, if we’re being honest, a favorite of those of us here at Oakes Daylilies, too. Vigorous and reliable, you can count on it for blooms you just can’t miss!

8″ blooms are a bright sunshine yellow and stand tall on scapes that reach 2′ in our East Tennessee garden.  A mid-season bloomer, we typically see this beauty in our zone 7 garden around mid June. Those to the north of us can expect to see it a bit later. Those of you to our south will see it a few weeks before we do.

A Semi-Evergreen daylily, Chicago Star will grow successfully in gardens across the nation.

These big bright blooms look fantastic on their own but are super striking when paired with red, orange or dark purple daylilies. For a nice twist, pair it with any color variety that has a yellow edge, eyezone or throat. Just gorgeous!

HOW TO GROW DAYLILIES: Daylilies are very easy-to-grow. They like a lot of sun and they like a lot of water. For more information on how to care for daylilies, click here.
WHAT DAYLILIES CAN I GROW: Most of you can grow any of the daylilies we sell. If you live in an area with a sustained cold period like we do in East Tennessee, you can grow all the varieties. However, If you live in an area that doesn’t get freezing weather in the winter (like zones 9 and 10), dormant varieties won’t work for you; you’ll need to choose evergreen or semi-evergreen varieties.

BIG PLANTS! When it comes to daylily plants, bigger is better! All of the plants we ship will be three fans or larger — two or three times (or more) what you might receive from other companies. Larger plants get established faster and bloom more quickly!

FARM-FRESH TO YOU! All of your plants will be freshly dug when you order. The leaves are trimmed and the plants are washed and air-dried. Your daylilies will be out of the ground less than 48 hours before they’re headed your way.

BONUS DAYLILIES: We send free daylilies (we call them “bonus” daylilies) with every order. These daylilies are equal to about 20% of your order, you get to choose what you’d like at checkout.

ABOUT US: Oakes Daylilies is a family-owned daylily farm that’s been in business for three generations. Our daylilies grow in home gardens, city parks and botanical gardens across the nation– including Hawaii and Canada. We are known in the industry as Daylily Experts and grow over 1000 varieties of daylilies on nearly 70 acres in East Tennessee. But over 50 years ago, we started just like you—with one daylily in a home garden.

    A Star in the Garden

    Valerie Engel (verified owner)

I received Chicago Star as a bonus several years ago and temporary planted it in a prominent place in my garden (thinking I would move it later, since it’s “just another yellow”). Wow! Was I wrong! These bloom are so beautiful–especially with that deep green throat. I’ve purchased it again and never tire of taking pictures of it. It grows fantastic in my Zone 5 northern Indiana garden.

  2. Disappointed With Performance

Received Chicago Star as a “Bonus” plant last year in Anaheim Hills, CA, Zone 9. Plant went dormant over winter and is just now starting to come back. I have removed plant from the ground and will try to grow in a container. I would not recommend this for Zone 9 gardens.

  3. Big, Bold and Beautiful!

    Jennifer McErlean

Love this daylily. I got this in 2018 and it was part of the jumbo collection which I got for some of the other dayliles not this one. I was never that crazy about all yellow daylilies but this one changed my mind. The blooms are huge and so bright yellow it really pops out in the garden even from far away! I used to live on Long Island zone 7 but moved this past year to upstate NY in the capital region zone 5b. I was worried since its colder but it still did amazing this summer.

  4. Had to get more!

    Tim Clark (verified owner)

I bought one Chicago Star and enjoyed it so much that I ordered three more! This daylily has the brightest blooms on tall scapes. It’s gorgeous planted beside Moana Loa too! It grows really well in my zone 6b garden.

  5. Chicago Star a twenty year favorite

    Marcia Macdonald (verified owner)

I have used Oakes for over 20 years both for my garden design business and the three homes I have owned. One of the first day likes I purchased was Chicago Star a beautiful trploid in a spectacular brilliant yellow. My order for my Wyoming Bighorn mountain home has arrived and within a few short weeks is already green and lush and I know will produce the same spectacular blooms I am used to with Oakes products

  6. Slow starter

    David Mason (verified owner)

My Oakes Daylilies haven’t failed me yet (I’ve stopped buying anywhere else) but I feared this was going to be the first. The others I got at the same time very quickly sprang up. It took an extra 10 days before it woke up; I just kept watering the spot and hoping. Suddenly there it was! I learn patience eventually! Zone 5 N Illinois

  7. A true beauty

Lynda Horn Russellville Arkansas zone 7b (verified owner)

I am so pleased with this day lily! Conditions here are so hot and humid in the summer, and Chicago Star is a true performer! The blooms were huge, opened well, and attracted pollinators which is a big bonus for me. The color is rich and the petals were always without flaws

    Doesn’t do well in 9

    Barbara Struck (verified owner)

I have planted six of these and I have one left. It doesn’t seem to like the long , hot Summers that we have. Or either they like some cold in the winter. Rarely gets to freezing here.

Dies over the winter in zone 9

    babs2227 (verified owner)

Perhaps I am doing something wrong with this daylily. I ordered 4-5 from Oakes several years ago and they replace one every year. Perhaps some didn’t have enough sun or they don’t like hot, humid Summers. Maybe they need a rest in the Winter, but our temps go from 70 to 35 all winter. I guess it just isn’t the daylily for North Florida. Most of my day lilies do very well. But I have found several varieties that just won’t live. Chicago Star is one. I have also lost all but one of my Mary Todd’s. Help.

Size, color, body, bloom time, and cost – all make this a perfect daylily. And, apparently it needs very little care as the is the first summer and it is acting like an established plant.
