I needed something colorful in early spring and bought six Charles Johnson daylilies. My specimens were healthy and happy when they went into the ground, and each of them bloomed very soon after planting this spring. While most were brilliant red, occasionally the color would fade to a darker hue as the afternoon progressed. Still, they were beautiful and perfect for my purpose (which was to surround my mailbox in color). A wonderful red for early in the season.
My grandfather Lee Gates named this daylily after me, his first grandson. I have several in my yard, and they are a very hardy plant with several beautiful blooms each year. No daylily garden would be complete with these beautiful reds in them.
Beautiful shade of red that makes you stop and look. Large blooms – a real beauty. I live in the Houston, Texas area and this lovely daylily holds its color, one of my favorites
So pretty. Was the very first to bloom (planted it in April) and has 2-3 open blooms daily. It is planted beside of my steps so I see it every time I go in and out of the house. Good foliage. Of course I don’t think I have ever seen an ugly daylily bloom. You won’t go wrong on this one.
Great plant along with red volunteer the best large reds.Mine just bloomed today in zone 6b,three yr old plant has 8 scapes with 16 buds on each scape thats 128 flowers on the first bloom.
Charles Johnston is a gorgeous bloomer and a must-have red daylily! Beautiful, large red blossoms – – the picture does not do it justice. I would definitely recommend this plant!
This was purchased a number of years ago and just delights me every time it blooms, the color is very red in my garden and it goes on and on in my zone 7 garden. A must have for lovers of red.
This is my favorite red in our garden. It never disappoints. The blooms look larger than the 6″ shown and are several and bloom for several weeks. This is simply a great daylily.
One of the most wonderful ‘bloomers’ I have. It blooms early and just keeps on with lots and lots of blooms. Can’t wait for it to be ready to divide. Love it.
This was a gift from a friend. You can’t go wrong with this daylily. I had so many blooms in 2005 I can’t wait for this summer to enjoy this one again. I highly recommend this one for the beginner.
This flower is an eye catcher! A beautiful red and although it is a prolific bloomer I always want more. I now look forward to another fantastic showing when it reblooms. What a joy. I may have to order another. Double my pleasure.
Does not look like the photograph here. It is a much darker burgundy as in the description. Still, it is a very lovely flower, just darker than I expected to see. Prolific bloomer.

It’s pretty simple: most of you can grow any of the daylilies we sell. If you live in an area with a sustained cold period like we do in East Tennessee, you can grow all the varieties. However, If you live in an area that doesn’t get freezing weather in the winter, dormant varieties won’t work for you; you need to choose evergreen or semi-evergreen varieties.
We normally include bonus plants equal to about 20% of your order. And these aren’t “leftover” plants, or “whatever we’ve got lying around.” These are the same huge, healthy plants we sell. Just leave the decision up to us— we’ll pick something we know you’ll love!
Daylily Stickers!
After the year we’ve all had, we’re trying to wring whatever joy we can find out of every day— even Tax Day*. So we put our thinking caps on and thought, “What is silly and fun and makes everyone happy?”.
That’s when it hit us: stickers! To make your day brighter, we are offering 13 stickers free with every order today through April 19!!!
Stick ’em on your water bottle, your cooler, your laptop (even your wheelbarrow!) or wherever else you could use a bit of cheery color.
*We know that Tax Day has officially been moved to May 17. Since today is traditionally Tax Day, though, we’re going for it.
