Five Tips for A Fabulous Daylily Garden

A fabulous garden doesn’t “just happen.” A lot of thought, hard work and sweat equity goes into the making of an “effortless” looking garden. We are all about enjoying the fruit of our labors (sweet tea in the shade, anyone?), but we also don’t mind putting in some hard work first in order to do so. That being said, we have jobs and lives outside of the garden. We can’t just spend all our days outside tending to our plants and flowers. No matter how much we may want to do so.

If you want to curate a lovely garden but don’t have tons of time to devote solely to it, this post is for you: Five Quick & Easy Tips for a Fabulous Garden. Daylilies are super easy to care for but let’s face it: all good things have a little sweat behind them.  So roll up your sleeves, put on your sunscreen, and get out in the garden!

Five Tips to Elevate a Garden From “Pretty” to “Pretty Fabulous”

1. It goes without saying that if one daylily looks good, more will look better. It doesn’t matter if you plant them by color or in a jumbled mass; large plantings of daylilies or other perennials are always more breathtaking than a single plant. Always.

2. That being said, if you only have a single plant, all is not lost! You don’t have to drive to your local nursery or run to the computer to order more—just highlight what you have. In other words, find a way to make the single plant become a focal point. You can do that by planting some perennials or annuals nearby in colors that complement the color of your daylily. (Visit our website and filter by color to see all the amazing color combinations we offer!) Or, plant a shrub or ornamental grass that has some of the same colors, or contrasting colors, in the foliage. I promise the result will be incredible.

3. Clean it up! No matter how many daylilies you have, or how nicely you have them planted, if they look bedraggled you have work to do. Pull off spent blooms and trim back ragged or damaged foliage and your garden will instantly look more inviting. Amazing!

4. I don’t care how beautiful your daylilies are, if you can’t see them for the weeds, they don’t look good!! Get the weeds out. Do the work. Your garden will thank you (and so will your neighbors!).

5. Mulch is your BFF. Seriously. Mulch is garden magic. Mulch or pine straw added to your garden beds suppresses weeds, retains moisture and makes your garden look “finished” and fabulous!

NOW is the time for sweet tea in the shade! Enjoy it and your daylilies and your fabulous-looking garden!
