HOW TO GROW DAYLILIES: Daylilies are very easy-to-grow. They like a lot of sun and they like a lot of water. For more information on how to care for daylilies, click here.
WHAT DAYLILIES CAN I GROW: Most of you can grow any of the daylilies we sell. If you live in an area with a sustained cold period like we do in East Tennessee, you can grow all the varieties. However, If you live in an area that doesn’t get freezing weather in the winter (like zones 9 and 10), dormant varieties won’t work for you; you’ll need to choose evergreen or semi-evergreen varieties.

BIG PLANTS! When it comes to daylily plants, bigger is better! All of the plants we ship will be three fans or larger — two or three times (or more) what you might receive from other companies. Larger plants get established faster and bloom more quickly!

FARM-FRESH TO YOU! All of your plants will be freshly dug when you order. The leaves are trimmed and the plants are washed and air-dried. Your daylilies will be out of the ground less than 48 hours before they’re headed your way.

BONUS DAYLILIES: We send free daylilies (we call them “bonus” daylilies) with every order. These daylilies are equal to about 20% of your order, you get to choose what you’d like at checkout.

ABOUT US: Oakes Daylilies is a family-owned daylily farm that’s been in business for three generations. Our daylilies grow in home gardens, city parks and botanical gardens across the nation– including Hawaii and Canada. We are known in the industry as Daylily Experts and grow over 1000 varieties of daylilies on nearly 70 acres in East Tennessee. But over 50 years ago, we started just like you—with one daylily in a home garden.

    Great Performer in Zone 7A

    Jeff McLean (verified owner)

Chicago Apache was one of my first daylilies from Oakes. It took a while to bloom, but the red was vibrant and the blooms were strong. So I ordered a few more to add to this “side attraction” in my garden. The ground where Chicago Apache was planted has not been amended, but the second year was as good as the first. And I’m thinking about adding more plants to this section of the garden, which gets no care but performs very well. Blazing brilliant red!

    Rust Resistant!

    JeanneHensley (verified owner)

I am in the Houston, Texas area and have really had to deal with daylily rust. I read that Chicago Apache was rust resistant and ordered a dozen this January,(2020). They are blooming now beautifully and their foilage looks wonderful. I will be ordering more. Also they are a very lovely shade of red.

What is your hardiness zone? Zone 7

30114 zone 7 clay. Many really red blooms every season. Nice thick clumps could be divided now after 4 seasons.

As most of the early to mid-season daylilies are fading, Chicago Apache is just beginning and so welcome. The blooms are rich, brilliant red with a thick texture and holds well in the sun. We have three (started with one that we have divided) in full sun and love them paired with solid yellow, yellow with red eye, and near white. This one will not disappoint.

I love this daylily. The red is vibrant and welcomes a second look. My clump is getting huge and will soon need splitting up. Can’t wait to spread her around my garden.

I have had this one for about 7 or 8 years, it is a staple in the garden. The plant is VERY vigorous and seems to require dividing at least every other year, so I have several huge clumps now and have given some away. (With organic fertilizer, it is almost “weed-like.”) I did have it in a dry location with absolutely no shade, and it tended to fade. It is really prettier in an area w/ some dappled shade. I have never seen it re-bloom. After it blooms, sometimes the foliage turns yellow and needs to be cut back. So, it is not really as “maintenance free” as some of the newer varieties, which is the only reason I did not give it a 10. Otherwise, it is a great plant and a great value since it increases rapidly.

A true star in my garden — and a true red! In it’s 3rd year Chicago Apache’s foliage spans over 3 feet in diameter! Mine is taller than 27 inches. This year’s blooms have just started, and with the 18 or so extra-sturdy scapes I’m sure it will be in bloom for quite awhile! As stated by another gardener, flowers are like red velvet. I really love this exciting daylily!!

Chicago Apache performed beautifully for just planting it in April. Its color is as pictured. Can’t wait to see it side by side with Scarlet Apache. I look forward to it for many years.

Beautiful velvet red blooming for a month in late summer. Mine does not rebloom. Does not fade & even can be picked for a one day show in a vase or buds will open over days once picked. A truely great red for reliability and beauty.

This has always been a great performer for me, with about a month of bloom. It establishes quickly, too. I never got it to rebloom for me.

This was my first red daylily and I’ve enjoyed 3-4 weeks of blooms every year (even during our severe dry summers). A real strong red that can stand up to our Georgia sunshine. Can’t go wrong with this one.
