Back Draft Daylily Features:

Not for the faint of heart!  Brilliant orange blooms with a vivid red eyezone are a huge 6″ and grow sturdy on scapes around 27″ tall in our East Tennessee garden. Everyone wants to know what these are and what they’re called.  They can—and will (read the reviews!)— stop traffic! Back Draft is a prolific bloomer so get ready for a bloom show!

Speaking of blooms… they are big and bold and simply gorgeous— especially when planted en masse. We also love them when paired with purple or lavender daylilies or you can plant it with other red daylilies to crank that heat up even higher!

A mid-to late season daylily, we usually see Back Draft around mid June to early July in our East Tennessee garden. If you are to the north of us, you’ll see them a bit later. If you are to our south, you’ll see them a couple of weeks before we do.

Back Draft is a dormant daylily which means it grows best in planting zones that get a sustained cold period in the winter.

Back Draft is one of five daylilies in our The Eyes Have It collection. If you love eyed daylilies, you need this collection!

HOW TO GROW DAYLILIES: Daylilies are very easy-to-grow. They like a lot of sun and they like a lot of water. For more information on how to care for daylilies, click here.
WHAT DAYLILIES CAN I GROW: Most of you can grow any of the daylilies we sell. If you live in an area with a sustained cold period like we do in East Tennessee, you can grow all the varieties. However, If you live in an area that doesn’t get freezing weather in the winter (like zones 9 and 10), dormant varieties won’t work for you; you’ll need to choose evergreen or semi-evergreen varieties.

BIG PLANTS! When it comes to daylily plants, bigger is better! All of the plants we ship will be three fans or larger — two or three times (or more) what you might receive from other companies. Larger plants get established faster and bloom more quickly!

FARM-FRESH TO YOU! All of your plants will be freshly dug when you order. The leaves are trimmed and the plants are washed and air-dried. Your daylilies will be out of the ground less than 48 hours before they’re headed your way.

BONUS DAYLILIES: We send free daylilies (we call them “bonus” daylilies) with every order. These daylilies are equal to about 20% of your order, you get to choose what you’d like at checkout.

ABOUT US: Oakes Daylilies is a family-owned daylily farm that’s been in business for three generations. Our daylilies grow in home gardens, city parks and botanical gardens across the nation– including Hawaii and Canada. We are known in the industry as Daylily Experts and grow over 1000 varieties of daylilies on nearly 70 acres in East Tennessee. But over 50 years ago, we started just like you—with one daylily in a home garden.

Love the name and its brillant in the garden with lots of beautiful gold blooms and red eye zone. Great multiplier and always tons of blooms. Lol…Only complaint, it’s a tough one to photograph due to the colors being so brillant!

  4. I couldn’t take my eyes away from this one!

Lynda Horn Russellville Arkansas zone 7b (verified owner)

This is one of the few blooming plants I’ve had that folks driving down my street stopped and ask me what it was. When I said it was a day lily named back draft they said that’s a day lily? It’s arresting, and the huge eye is even bigger than in the pictures. This was a very sturdy plant, and kept blooming long after other day lilies had quit.

I live across the street from our Volunteer Fire Dept – so I told them about Back Draft when it started to bloom. This is its first season and it knocked our socks off! Big, healthy blossoms from late June to early August – what fun! Zone 5, southeastern Nebraska

  7. One of the most beautiful daylilies available

    Sylvia Leath (verified owner)

Back Draft is a very showy daylily in the garden. It’s colors are wonderful, and it is aptly named. It isn’t billed as a rebloomer, but it is July 13th today in Waco, Texas, and Back Draft is putting up yet another scape. You can’t go wrong with this one.

Gorgeous daylily – a real stunner. The pictures do not even come close to how beautiful it is in person. Prolific bloomer.

I love brash, bright orange color and paid a premium for Back Draft a couple years ago. It bloomed the second year and was nice enough. But comparing flower color alone, I strongly prefer Lady Lucille, but especially Mancatcher! Seeing all of these side by side, Back Draft is interesting and bright, but not nearly as fiery as the other two. If you are looking for interesting pattern in the bloom, Back Draft is certainly stands out. As bright as it is, if you prefer molten color, the other two seem better.
